Percolate

Dear Aaron Sorkin,

Just a little Q...

When do you keep an idea to yourself so it can percolate and grow, and when do you talk it about it with others so it can get some fresh air and new perspectives?

Best,
Laura

  • Here is an idea to percolate on - especially regarding new work and one-person shows. My friend Dean Evans (mime artist, clown, Neo-Futurist, one of the most compelling performers I've seen on stage) said this in his blog:

These days, for me, the art happens in the first half second the performer enters the stage. Everything after that is for your entertainment.

What do you think? Is this a challenge to overcome in generating work? Or is it a secret to be cherished?

I think it's true to the extent that the first half second on stage is like the first few moments a baby is born - completely overwhelmed by the elements, open to experience, un-self-conscious....and then you become very aware of your audience, and then the quality of the performance shifts every so slightly. But, where are the moments when you can push the reset button for yourself and for the audience?

    Something to percolate. :>
